The Korean multi-step approach is built on a different assumption to a minimal Western routine: rather than one rich moisturiser doing most of the hydrating work, several thin, watery layers are applied in sequence, each adding a little more hydration than the last. The logic is the same thin-to-thick layering principle used everywhere else in skincare — it is just applied with more steps and thinner individual layers than most routines outside Korea use.
In order: oil cleanser, water-based cleanser (the double cleanse), gentle exfoliation (a few times a week, not daily), toner, essence, treatment or serum, sheet mask, eye cream, moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning or a heavier sleeping pack at night. Not every step is used every day even within the tradition it comes from — sheet masks and exfoliation in particular are occasional rather than daily.
Double cleansing earns its place specifically when there is sunscreen or makeup to remove — an oil-based first cleanse dissolves what water alone cannot, followed by a gentle water-based cleanser. On a bare face at the end of an indoors day, one cleanse is enough. Toner and essence both add a layer of hydration before the treatment step, which is genuinely useful for dry or dehydrated skin, though the distinction between the two is more about viscosity and marketing than a functional difference.
An essence, layered separately from a hydrating serum, is often doing a very similar job to that serum — running both is a reasonable indulgence rather than a necessity. A sleeping pack is, in practice, close to a rich night moisturiser; if you already use one, adding a separate sleeping pack is mostly a texture and ritual preference rather than a functional gap being filled.
Cleanse, toner, serum, moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning — with an eye cream added if you use one, and a sheet mask kept as an occasional extra rather than a daily habit. That is a genuine, effective routine that keeps the layering principle behind the ten-step method without requiring ten separate products every day.
Stacking several exfoliating or treatment products in one sitting — an acid toner followed by a retinol serum followed by an exfoliating mask, for example — is one of the more common routes to irritation in any routine, K-beauty or otherwise. Each additional active step should replace something else that day, not simply pile on top of it.
