Salicylic Acid: What It Is and What It Does
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) used in skincare for its ability to exfoliate and to penetrate oil within pores, which is why it is a common choice for congested or acne-prone skin. Unlike water-soluble AHAs, its oil solubility lets it work inside the pore itself rather than only on the surface.
What it does
Salicylic acid works by loosening the bonds between dead skin cells on the surface and, because it is oil-soluble, it can also penetrate into oil-filled pores to help clear congestion from within. This combination makes it a common choice for blackheads, visible pores and general surface texture linked to excess oil. It is not typically the first choice for skin that is already very dry or reactive.
