Ultrasonic skin cleansing uses a handheld device that vibrates at a high, ultrasonic frequency against damp skin to help lift away surface oil, dead skin cells and residue that cleanser alone may leave behind. It is a physical, mechanical action rather than a chemical one, often paired with a spatula-like edge for gentle exfoliation.
These devices create tiny, rapid vibrations that, applied to damp skin, help dislodge dirt, excess sebum and the outermost layer of dead skin cells without the friction of manual scrubbing. Many models use a silicone or rubber tip for contact and gentle exfoliation. This differs from chemical exfoliants such as AHAs and BHAs, which dissolve the bonds between skin cells chemically — ultrasonic cleansing works by physical removal instead, and is generally used as a step within, not a replacement for, regular cleansing.
Ultrasonic cleansing tends to suit oily or congested skin that struggles to remove all trace of makeup and sebum with a standard cleanser alone, and anyone wanting a gentle physical alternative to manual scrubbing. Sensitive skin should start on the lowest intensity setting, since the vibration can occasionally cause irritation. Very dry skin may find the sensation too stimulating for regular use.
Excessive pressure, or use on broken or actively irritated skin, can cause micro-tears or inflammation, so a light touch matters. Anyone with a condition such as eczema or rosacea should check with a dermatologist before use, and the device should not be applied directly to open blemishes or wounds. Following the manufacturer's instructions on intensity and duration is worth doing carefully.
