Sunscreen carries stronger evidence behind it than almost any other product on this site, and it is also the product most often used at less than its tested strength. This ranking pulls every sunscreen we track on Amazon UK and orders it by customer rating weighted against review volume, so a product a handful of reviewers loved cannot rank above one thousands of people rated consistently. We have not tested these sunscreens ourselves, and star ratings mostly reflect texture, scent and how a formula wears under makeup rather than measured UV protection — SPF and UVA-star figures come from the product's own listing and packaging, not from our own testing, and are worth checking directly. Texture tends to decide which sunscreen actually gets used daily, which is arguably more important than any small difference in SPF number between two well-rated products, and the price range here runs wide enough that several highly-rated options sit under £15.
Ranked from 21 sunscreen listed on Amazon UK. We do not physically test products — see “How we picked these” below.
We start from every sunscreen listed on Amazon UK, then rank by a score that weights customer rating against how many people rated it — a 5.0 average from three reviewers cannot outrank a 4.6 average from three thousand, because a handful of ratings tells you very little on its own. The top 12 by that score make this list. We do not accept payment for placement or ranking, and we do not physically test products ourselves: everything above is drawn from listed Amazon UK product data and customer review data, refreshed periodically.

Laboratory SPF testing assumes roughly a third of a teaspoon for the face — most people apply well under half that, which cuts real-world protection sharply regardless of the number on the bottle. Consistent, generous application matters more than the gap between SPF 30 and SPF 50.
In the UK, look for four or five stars, or PA+++ and above on the packaging. SPF alone measures UVB protection and says nothing about UVA, which penetrates deeper and contributes most to long-term skin ageing.
Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) sit on the surface, tend to suit sensitive skin, and can leave a visible cast — reviews mentioning cast or whiteness are usually describing a mineral formula. Chemical filters absorb UV and are typically cosmetically lighter. Neither is inherently safer.
A sunscreen that pills under makeup or stings the eyes will not get used consistently, and consistency is where nearly all of the real-world benefit comes from. Reviews mentioning texture and wear under makeup are worth reading even on the highest-ranked product.
No sunscreen lasts a full day on skin exposed to sun, sweat or water — the general guidance is reapplication every two hours in strong sun, and immediately after swimming or towelling dry. For daily indoor-mostly use, a single morning application is a reasonable compromise, but it is worth checking a listing's stated water resistance before relying on one application through an active day outdoors. A spray or stick format that fits in a bag makes that reapplication realistically more likely to actually happen, which matters more in practice than a marginal difference in SPF number between two similarly ranked products.
