What to look for
SPF applied properly beats a higher number applied thinly
Laboratory SPF testing assumes roughly a third of a teaspoon for the face — most people apply well under half that, which cuts real-world protection sharply regardless of the number on the bottle. Consistent, generous application matters more than the gap between SPF 30 and SPF 50.
Check the UVA rating separately from SPF
In the UK, look for four or five stars, or PA+++ and above on the packaging. SPF alone measures UVB protection and says nothing about UVA, which penetrates deeper and contributes most to long-term skin ageing.
Mineral and chemical filters suit different skin
Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) sit on the surface, tend to suit sensitive skin, and can leave a visible cast — reviews mentioning cast or whiteness are usually describing a mineral formula. Chemical filters absorb UV and are typically cosmetically lighter. Neither is inherently safer.
Texture decides whether it gets reapplied

Reapplication is the part almost everyone skips
