Foundation is arguably the hardest beauty product to buy without trying it, because two separate things both have to be right: the undertone and the finish. This ranking orders every foundation we track on Amazon UK by customer rating weighted against review volume, so a product a small number of reviewers loved cannot outrank one that thousands rated consistently well — but a strong rating here reflects satisfaction across a huge range of skin tones and types, not a guarantee that a specific shade will match you. We have not tested these foundations ourselves. Shade range varies enormously between the brands in this list, from a handful of shades to fifty or more, which is worth checking on the product page before the star rating, since a five-star average built on a narrow shade range tells you less about your own likely match than the same rating on a brand with wide coverage.
Ranked from 25 foundation listed on Amazon UK. We do not physically test products — see “How we picked these” below.
We start from every foundation listed on Amazon UK, then rank by a score that weights customer rating against how many people rated it — a 5.0 average from three reviewers cannot outrank a 4.6 average from three thousand, because a handful of ratings tells you very little on its own. The top 12 by that score make this list. We do not accept payment for placement or ranking, and we do not physically test products ourselves: everything above is drawn from listed Amazon UK product data and customer review data, refreshed periodically.

Getting the depth of a shade slightly wrong is usually forgivable; getting the undertone wrong reads as a mask. Cool undertones lean pink or red, warm lean golden or olive, neutral sits between — check against your jaw in daylight rather than against the back of your hand.
Oily skin generally holds a matte or natural finish longer through the day; dry or mature skin tends to look better in a satin or dewy formula, since matte finishes can settle into fine lines and dry patches regardless of how well-rated the product is overall.
Brands offering fifty-plus shades give a materially better chance of a true match than one offering six, independent of the star rating. Checking shade count on the listing before buying is worth doing alongside reading the review score.
Many foundations darken slightly over the first thirty minutes as they react with skin oils and air. A shade that looks perfect immediately in a mirror can read as too dark an hour later — reviews mentioning oxidation are worth reading even on a highly-rated product.
A buildable medium-coverage foundation can be sheered out with a damp sponge or layered up for more coverage, which gives it flexibility a full-coverage formula does not have in reverse — a heavy-coverage product cannot easily be made to look sheer. If a listing does not state coverage level, reviews describing the product as buildable or full-coverage are usually a more reliable guide than the product name alone. Buying up in coverage narrows your options more than buying a lighter formula and building on it.
